McLean County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) encourages schools, businesses, and other organizations to put their emergency response plan(s) up for review with our agency. We will work closely with your representatives to include any additional information or resources we may be able to provide during the event of an emergency.
For more information, contact the EMA at (309) 888-5020.
Definition of a Hazardous Materials Emergency
Any time a chemical escapes from its container in a manner in which it was not supposed to, a hazardous materials emergency could happen. When this happens, people, animals, property, and the environment (air, water and soil) might become contaminated with the hazardous material.
Reasons for Chemical Escapes
A chemical may escape from a container for several reasons:
- A container might leak because it is old and worn out
- A container could be damaged in a traffic accident, be dropped, or bumped hard while being moved
- A container could have an improperly closed valve
- A container could have been purposefully left open to hurt people, animals, or the environment
Additional Information
McLean County LEPC maintains Tier II information containing required facilities that disclose emergency contact information and what hazardous materials they have on site. In the event of an emergency in or around one of these facilities, first responders will be able to know what hazards may be present in the area.
