3rd Dose of Pfizer or Moderna for those immunocompromised

MCHD is now offering a 3rd dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. If you meet at least one of the criteria below, you may receive this additional dose provided at least 28 days have passed since your second dose of Pfizer or Moderna. This additional dose is intended to improve immunocompromised people’s response to their initial vaccine series. However, it is not the same as a booster dose, which is given to people when the immune response to a primary vaccine series is likely to have waned over time. MCHD encourages eligible individuals to consult with their medical provider to discuss if an additional dose is appropriate for them. Criteria includes:

  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response
