In recognition of SEPTIC SMART WEEK, the McLean County Health Department wants to help you protect your investment and the environment by reviewing important maintenance requirements for your private sewage disposal system (septic system).
Here is what you need to know. If your septic system was installed in 2015:
• it must be evaluated within the first 3 years of operation to assure it is operating properly;
• it must be evaluated at least every five years on a follow up basis;
• evaluations must be documented on the approved form available online from the Illinois Department of Public Health; and,
• maintenance records must be transferred from owner-to-owner during real estate transfer and kept for the life of the septic system.
It is highly recommended you hire a licensed professional to evaluate your septic system. The Code does allow a person to evaluate their owner occupied residence. McLean County Licensed Septic System Installers are the only professionals licensed to evaluate existing septic systems in McLean County.
